Paul Kent believes the Panthers’ premiership hopes are done and dusted after their shock 16-10 defeat at the hands of the Rabbitohs in the qualifying final.

The loss to Souths sees Penrith switch to the Storm’s side of the draw and leaves them having to beat the winner of the Eels and the Knights clash just to get a shot at a preliminary final against Melbourne. Speaking on Triple M Kent believes the Panthers played tired against South Sydney and doubts they will have enough gas in the tank to beat a well rested Storm outfit in the preliminary final provided they advance to that stage.

“They are done Penrith,” Kent said on Triple M.

“Look they played tired last night Gorden (Tallis).

“You go through the weekend. Melbourne put an absolute score on Manly. Melbourne rested a lot of players in the lead-up and Manly didn’t. And Melbourne played fresh.

“Then you’ve got last night and Gold Coast had a crack and they had a few players rested as well. They nearly pulled it off.

The points system remains the same the Super Rugby competition with four points awarded for a win, two points for a draw and bonus points are awarded for losing by seven points or less or by winning by three tries or more.

At the end of 10 rounds, the team on the most competition points will be crowned the inaugural Super Rugby Aotearoa Final .

Prada Cup continued to turn the challenger

 

American Magic, the highly fancied team from the New York Yacht Club, was widely expected to emerge as top challenger from the Round Robin phase of the Challenger Selection Series.

Instead they have come away from two days of racing without scoring a win point. INEOS Team UK, written off by most commentators before the regatta, has emerged with three points from three races.

Despite Regatta Director, Iain Murray's expectations to the contrary, the SW breeze filled in and racing started on schedule just after 3 pm as originally scheduled.

Today's forecast was for breezes around 10 knots, which would be less suitable for INEOS based on her performance in marginal foiling conditions, in December's America's Cup World Series and the Xmas Cup Prada Cup 2021

The British syndicate came out yesterday on Day 1, putting a stranglehold on the Prada Cup and shocking the sailing world. Ben Ainslie and crew dominated their competitors and took home two easy wins. They showed excellent pace in the denser south-westerly wind that hovered around 15 knots. Despite their impressive Day 1, there was still speculation that they may struggle in the lighter winds forecast for today.

Yesterday the breeze filled in nicely with a solid 12 to 15 knots, in which the Brits were foiling easily, with a softer south-westerly, today's conditions were always going to be a moment of truth for the Brits.

Luna Rossa got away to a very nice start, while American Magic got stuck off the foils deep in the start box. The Italian syndicate set off on the first beat at double the speed of the Americans. Spithill and Bruni stepped out to a 300m lead very quickly. Things went from bad to worse for Barker and Hutchinson as they slipped off the foils during a maneuver as they entered the top third of the course.

Luna Rossa looked very much in control as they did during the Xmas Cup, doing a small touch down on their final tack before the mark but rounded tidily and set off downwind towards the right-hand boundary while American Magic still couldn't get foiling again.

Race officials deemed there to be sufficient wind to get the race underway but at the top of the course it looked extremely light. Luna Rossa's boat speed dropped below the magic number of around 17 knots required for foiling as they completed their boundary gybe and splashed down into the water themselves. Spithill and Bruni had to turn back and sail upwind to get to the next puff of wind so that they could get underway again. Meanwhile American Magic is still to round the first mark, now more than five minutes behind.

Hockey has not been on our televisions for almost three months and fans are starting to become anxious. The NHL finally has a target date of Jan 13, but before that happens, we have some junior hockey to watch.

The 2021 tournament is the 45th edition of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship and it will take place in Alberta within the confines of the Edmonton “bubble” that was established in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. The festivities will begin on Dec 25 instead of the usual Dec 26 tradition we have grown so accustomed to and conclude with the gold-medal game on Jan 5, 2021.

Following the news that Logan Paul is set to fight Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in 2021, gamers have already rushed to simulate the bout on Fight Night Champion.

There’s very little in the way of realism in this particular simulation, other than the fact that Paul is notably much, much larger than Mayweather Paul fight online .

We recently heard Joe Rogan note that Paul’s size is the only possible issue for Mayweather heading into this bout. Otherwise, the fact that Paul is able to land plenty of leather on Mayweather in the opening round will have boxing fans scoffing. 

The simulation sees Mayweather floor Paul several times en route to a stoppage victory, but pundits would likely suggest that a points win for Mayweather is just as likely.

If we discount his win over Conor McGregor, Mayweather hadn’t stopped anyone in a professional ring since 2011. As a result – and thanks to the size differentiation between the two – Mayweather will likely be happy to cruise to a decision win, using his keen defensive skills and accurate punching.

All that’s happened all night long, is one guy punishing the other,” declared the Fight Night commentators – and that could well be the case when the pair meet in reality. We certainly saw Mayweather punish McGregor for stepping into his world – the boxing ring – but will we see the same against Paul? 

Another downside to this simulation is that Fight Night Champion just doesn’t do Mayweather’s defensive style justice. It’s understandable because the game isn’t exactly cutting edge tech at this stage, having been released in 2011, but it simply can’t capture “Money’s” fluid movements and the way he easily turns defensive work into offense.

While the world champion Springboks pulled out of the The Rugby Championship last week because they felt they were putting their players at risk by playing given a lack of match practice, the Pumas are coming into the tournament with a quarter of what their southern hemisphere competitors would have had under their belts.

Hitherto, the Pumas have been able to train behind closed doors at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney's inner-west since touching down in Australia earlier in the month.

But after a month of quarantine – first in Montevideo in Uruguay – the majority of the Pumas squad is at last able to roam freely.

It makes Saturday’s opposed training session against a Waratahs XV - which won’t be open to the public in Sydney – all the more important.

Whitelock, who started at lock in the All Blacks' 16-all draw over the weekend, suffered a head knock and is undergoing concussion protocols.

If Whitelock isn't cleared to play, it could mean a potential start for 20-year-old Tupou Vaa'i, who made his All Blacks debut off the bench last Sunday.

Scott Barrett could be back to help the All Blacks' lock stocks – but a lack of match fitness could see him play for Taranaki before joining the national side.

Meanwhile, Highlanders first-five Josh Ioane could be called into the team and trained with the squad in Auckland on Wednesday, with Beauden Barrett – who trained separately from the team – still seemingly recovering from an Achilles tendon injury that kept him out of the Bledisloe opener.

Richie Mo'unga, who coach Ian Foster admitted was sore after the first test, isn't a doubt for the second clash.

All Blacks selector Grant Fox said on Sky Sport's The Breakdown that they were assessing "a couple of injuries".

Two new faces in All Blacks squad for Rugby Championship

Otago prop George Bower and Wellington loose forward Du'Plessis Kirifi, who are both uncapped will join as cover. The moves come due to the head knock Joe Moody suffered in the second Bledisloe Cup test against the Wallabies, and both tighthead Nepo Laulala and loosie Ardie Savea on paternity leave.

Bower and Kirifi, aged 28 and 23 respectively, have 38 Super Rugby caps between them.

Moody suffered the knock just half an hour into Sunday's match, and is currently working through HIA protocols. Laulala and Savea are expected to join the team over in Australia in one to two weeks.

Midfielders Ngani Laumape and Peter Umaga-Jensen are also part of the 38-man squad.

Three players have been released to compete in the Mitre 10 Cup this weekend before departing, with Mitchell Dunshea and Cullen Grace available for Canterbury, while Akira Ioane is free to link up with Auckland.

New Zealand will compete in four matches across the ditch, starting off with a third Bledisloe tussle against the Wallabies in Sydney on October 31. They travel over on Sunday.

Ireland’s tour to Australia in July will not go ahead as scheduled following the postponement of all international fixtures by World Rugby.

Andy Farrell’s side had been due to face the Wallabies in two Tests on 4 and 11 July at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and Sydney’s Cricket Ground respectively.

In a statement, IRFU performance director David Nucifora said: “While it is disappointing that the summer tour to Australia will not go ahead as scheduled, it will not be a surprise to many as it is clear that COVID-19 will have implications for our game for some time to come.

Springboks to host Scotland and Georgia in July 2020

SA Rugby confirmed on Wednesday that the Springboks will face Scotland and Georgia in three home Tests in the new international window of July 2020, as part of the Castle Lager Incoming Series match schedule.

The newly-crowned Rugby World Cup champions are scheduled to play two Tests against Scotland, on 4 and 11 July, before hosting Georgia in a historical first home Test, on Saturday, 18 July.

It will be the Scots’ first visit to South Africa since June 2014, when the Boks beat them by 55-6 in Port Elizabeth.

Handre Pollard was one of five players who made his Test debut that day and he rounded off a fine performance by kicking five conversions and a penalty goal.

The last time the Boks met Scotland, was in November 2018, when the South Africans won 26-20 in Edinburgh, with Pollard again a thorn in the flesh of the Scots, scoring 18 points through a try, two conversions and three penalty goals.

The Springboks and Georgia have only met once before, in a pool match at the Rugby World Cup in 2003 in Sydney, when SA won 46-19, scoring seven tries in the process.

Former Springbok captain and SA Rugby Player of the Year, Schalk Burger, made his Test debut and scored his first try in green and gold on that day at Aussie Stadium.

SA Rugby will confirm the venues and kick-off times of the three matches at a later stage.

Wallabies will play Ireland at Suncorp Stadium in July 2020

Coronavirus: All club and community rugby postponed until April 18

New Zealand Rugby has postponed all club and community rugby until April 18 to combat coronavirus.

The decision is effective immediately.

“The postponement includes all rugby matches,” said a statement from New Zealand Rugby. “Non-contact training activities can continue at least in the short term while we continue to monitor the situation with the Ministry of Health.”

“All team-based activity will be adapted to comply with the limits the Ministry has set. This includes minimising person-to-person contact and maintaining hygiene standards including not sharing drink bottles, washing hands and regularly cleaning rugby equipment.

“It is a difficult decision for our organisation to make but it is important that we do this in the interests of the health of all rugby participants.”

“The well-being of our players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider New Zealand community is our top priority. And, while this will be disappointing for many, postponing rugby for the time being is in everyone’s best interests.”

“Rugby plays an important role in New Zealand communities and at this time of uncertainty the postponement of rugby matches allows everyone to pause, and take care of themselves and their whanau. It also gives the Provincial Unions and local competition organisers the opportunity to regroup, reschedule and determine how they can deliver meaningful competition when rugby resumes.

“School rugby and in most cases junior club rugby competitions start in early May and are therefore unaffected by the postponement at this stage.

“Given the situation with COVID-19 is constantly changing we continue to ask everyone involved in rugby to support one another and follow the official government guidelines, and we will also be reviewing activity daily bases on this advice.”

All Blacks finalise home fixtures for 2020 international calendar

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) have announced the venues and dates for the All Blacks season, with Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Hamilton set to share hosting rights for the six home tests.

The All Blacks play Wales in Auckland on July 4 – a fitting venue for new Wales head coach and former Auckland and North Harbour coach Wayne Pivac.

The All Blacks are expected to announce Steve Hansen’s successor later this month – with Ian Foster and Scott Robertson believed to be the front-runners.
